TORN (Time, Outcome, Resources, Noise Level)

Be explicit with your expectations so that all pupils know what you want. Using the acronym TORN (see checklist) is an effective way of remembering to give all the key information to pupils. Setting the expectations before giving a task can also ensure that you are not stopping pupils within a few minutes of them beginning to correct behaviour.

Examples
‘You have 15 minutes to write two paragraphs in the front of your book. We’re going to complete this in silence so that everyone can focus.’ Check in with children. ‘How long do we have? How many paragraphs do you need to write?’
