Linking New Learning to Prior Knowledge

Establish what children already know and ensure that new learning builds on prior learning.  Knowledge builds on knowledge.

Checklist

Be aware of pupils’ previous learning (both in their current year group and in previous year groups).
Plan how to link the new knowledge to pupils’ existing knowledge.
Revisit the ‘Big Ideas’ within each curriculum area.

Example

  1. When teaching a new history unit, establish the new period of history relative to the time periods that children have already learned about.
  2. Revisit the ‘Big Ideas’. For example, revisit democracy in a previously learned period of history before exploring democracy in the current time period.
  3. Compare and contrast the the ‘Big Ideas’.
